An Open Letter to Senate & House Members

The past 14 have been rough on the American public. You spent way too much time and money investigating Clinton and really, all you came up with is that he lied about sex. Big deal; from the looks of things, some of you have too, and some of you have lied about much more than that.

The past 6 years have been truly the worst in my 43 years. You got us into a war (conflict?) based on lies. Too many young men and women have died for the sake of oil and Christianity. Oh yes, that’s right. I remember the president’s “Crusade on Terror.”

You have allowed fear to rule. And you have allowed us all to be stripped of our basic freedoms and hope, of all things. Nice job!! That must have taken so much out of you that 93 days of work was all you could give us.

You have all lost touch with THE PEOPLE. Remember us? The DECIDERS?
Do you REALLY want to represent us? I hope so. If you do, keep these things in mind:

This government is supposed to be FOR us, whether we are gay, white, black, Asian, Muslim, poor, rich, etc. You are NOT to cast us aside any longer for Corporate America or the Religious Right.

The playing field is NOT even. We all don’t have equal rights or chances. You have the power to fix this. Rehabilitate those in prison; it’s cheaper and better for society. Let felons vote after they’ve paid their debt in full.

The poor and middle class keep losing. No one can live on the current minimum wage. Try it for a week. Or how about Social Security? That’s not a livable wage either. Stop trying to prevent people from trying to climb out of the black hole of poverty.

Stop trying to define family and marriage. They are what we want them to be.

Increase the Social Security income cutoff. Begin free healthcare with every newborn baby and increase the age every two years.

Tax the corporations and wealthy at a higher rate. How much money does one REALLY need? Our economy would be stronger with more people being a part of it.

Stop the idiotic immigration stuff. Where the hell did YOUR families come from? Why is it that it is a huge issue when the immigrants have browner skin? Historically, this is true.

Stop acting like we aren’t smart enough to understand the issues. Apparently it is partially our own faults that you act this way. We’re truly sorry. NOW KNOCK IT OFF!!

Medicare Part D is a joke. I’d be homeless and eating out of garbage cans if I didn’t have family to live with. Medication would take over half of my meager Social Security after I surpassed my limit. MUCH more later……….We’ll be watching you all.

I REALLY AM A PATRIOT!

I really AM a Patriot

Here's the thing: Life is not supposed to be that hard. If life seems really difficult, it's time to step back and figure out what the hell you are doing wrong.

The only reason I know this is because I have lived for a while, and sometimes things got to be very difficult, but the older I've gotten, the more I know that while it isn't easy, we're usually the one getting in our own way.

I totally forgot, until just now, how pissed off I was about the suspension of the Colorado school teacher who actually ASKED HIS STUDENTS TO THINK!!

The schools are so busy trying to satisfy the religious right and the most worthless of all programs: No child Left Behind that they seem to forget that we are actually going to expect these kids to be productive and informed members of society.

It should come as absolutely no surprise that there are some pretty scary similarities in the way both Hitler and Bush's administrations accomplished things.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

"Patriotism does not oblige us to acquiesce in the destruction of liberty. Patriotism obliges us to question it, at least.
--Wendy Kaminer, 2003

Question authority!

Remember: "No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots." Barbara Erdreich
